Meet a Team Member – James

Hi, I’m James.

After four years of working as a graphic designer for the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control, I decided it was time to look for a “better” job, something a little more challenging and a little more rewarding. Week after week and month after month, I searched the classifieds, but nothing really jumped out at me as something I (emphasis on the word “I”) wanted to do. So, the search continued.

But eventually my six-month search still turned up nothing. Finally, I decided to stop looking and just pray more earnestly about it, praying more for His will than for the right job for me—something I should have done more before. One verse that the Lord kept on my heart over the past years has been Psalm 37:4—“Delight thyself also in the Lord; and He shall give thee the desires of thy heart.” I would soon find out that the desires of my heart would lead me straight to Petersburg, Kentucky.

A few weeks later, Jon, a friend from graduate school called me up. As we talked, I told him about my search for a better job and he asked me if I had considered relocating—specifically, he asked me if I had ever considered relocating to Kentucky. Kentucky had never crossed my mind and I even laughed about it at first. He told me more about the Creation Museum and the need for a graphic designer, and the opportunity to be part of what the Lord was doing here. I prayed about it, and soon I was preparing my portfolio. But in my mind, I kept asking myself—“Kentucky? What’s in Kentucky?”

Long story short, a few days later I was on a plane heading to Kentucky for the interview. When I arrived at the museum, I was amazed at what was going on here and knew this was exactly where the Lord wanted me.

Now, a year later, it’s still amazing to me whenever I pull into the gates of the museum. But just to be a part of this ministry has been worth the move 500 miles away from everything familiar to me. No longer was I working for just an agency, but for a ministry, and that has made all the difference. It amazes me to think about what roads the Lord leads us down to get us to exactly where we need to be.

As a graphic designer here, I have been developing and designing the signage and graphics for much of the museum. Coming up with a look that complements the architecture and texture of the building has been a fun, exciting, and challenging experience. This museum is more than just flat walls with exhibits all along the walls; the texture and feel of each room will make each one a whole new experience.

Currently, I am working on graphics for the 22 gallery panels for the Wonders Room, as well as wrapping up signage for the Lobby, Canyon, and Dig Site. Other projects have included logos and graphics for Noah’s Café, the Stargazers Planetarium, and the Dragon Hall Bookstore, titles for the various videos, decorative shields for the bookstore, and continued development of exhibit signs.

Having been here for a little over a year, I can see the Lord’s hand at work as the work continues and we draw closer to opening day. It is truly a humbling privilege to be part of this museum design team, working with a great group of talented artists, sculptors, and designers whose goal is to open the museum to reach souls for Christ. Looking around and seeing the tremendous opportunity before us to open eyes and share the message of God’s Word makes every day an exciting privilege.

Thanks again for joining us. We appreciate all of your prayers and support for the museum.
