“Scope It Out!” Microscope Workshops

The Creation Museum is excited to present the “Scope It Out!” series on the function and use of microscopes.

Scope It Out! is taught by Dr. David Menton, a popular speaker at the Creation Museum. With his years of experience teaching medical students and his great sense of humor, Dr. Menton brings expertise and fun to this fascinating subject.

You might be asking yourself, “Why would I want to learn to use a microscope?” The following excerpt from the class manual explains it well:

Over the entrance to the library at Woods Hole Marine Biology laboratory is a sign, hand written by the great scientist Louis Agassiz, which reads “Study nature, not books.” A curious sign indeed for a library since there is much about nature that can be learned from books. But still, there is no substitute for the direct study of nature itself. Such direct study can be greatly enhanced with the right equipment and instruments . . . Perhaps no instrument has contributed more to our understanding of biology than the microscope.

There are currently two classes being offered: “Microscope 101: An Introduction to Microscopy,” and “Microscope 201: Mammalian Tissues.”*

Microscope 101: An Introduction to Microscopy: By the end of this class you will know the parts of the microscope and their function. You will have an understanding of how to determine the resolution of a microscope and be able to properly illuminate your subject. We’ll show you how to do a wet mount, an important technique that will enable you to expand your study of the microscopic world. Most importantly, you will know how to focus and use your microscope for the best possible view of your miniscule targets. Upon successful completion of the course you will receive a card showing you are certified to take advanced classes.

Microscope 201: Mammalian Tissues*: In this class you will use your microscope skills as you study the four mammalian tissue types. This will be followed by a lesson in the anatomy and function of the skin and kidney at a microscopic level. During the final portion of the session, you will be given the opportunity to apply your knowledge as you search microscope slides to find and identify the tissues you’ve studied.

Tickets are $15.95 per participant for one class and just $25.95 for two classes in the same day. This class is designed for ages 14 and up. (Ticket prices include tax.) One free observer’s ticket is available per participant. Observers will sit in the back of the classroom (not adjacent to the microscopes).

To register or check availability, please call (800) 778-3390. Please note that tickets are nonrefundable on the day of the event.

If you own a microscope, please feel free to bring it with you so that you can learn how to better use your own scope in addition to the scopes that we will be using in class.

We will be adding classes to this series so please check back often for updates.

For more information about this program, or if you have any questions, please contact scopeitout@creationmuseum.org.

*Microscope 101 must be completed as a prerequisite to participation in any advanced classes.
