Bill Maher Is Going to Pass On

I certainly don’t say this lightly, but for comedian and TV commentator Bill Maher and his present spiritual state, I make that comment above about his future with great sadness.

In fact, I’m sure that even every atheist would agree with this part of a verse from Hebrews: “And as it is appointed for men to die once . . . ”

But, it’s the next part of the verse that God-haters like Bill Maher refuse to accept: “And as it is appointed for men to die once, but after this the judgment” (Hebrews 9:27).

So why do I single out Bill Maher?

A number of news sources recently reported on how Bill Maher used his TV program Real Time to make yet another God-hating statement. The Washington Times reported the following:

Comedian Bill Maher told his HBO “Real Time” audience recently that God was a “psychotic mass murderer.”

He made the comments during a conversation on the biblical story of Noah and the upcoming Hollywood version of it that’s about to hit the big screen [on Friday].

“But the thing that’s really disturbing about Noah isn’t the silly, it’s that it’s immoral. It’s about a psychotic mass murderer who gets away with it, and his name is God,” Mr. Maher said, adding, “What kind of tyrant punishes everyone just to get back at the few he’s mad at? I mean, besides Chris Christie [the embattled governor of New Jersey].”

Mr. Maher continued: “Hey God, you know you’re kind of a [expletive deleted] when you’re in a movie with Russell Crowe and you’re the one with anger issues. […] Conservatives are always going on about how Americans are losing their values and their morality, well maybe it’s because you worship a guy who drowns babies.”

So why does God allow Bill Maher to continue his increasing God-hating comments? He really is tempting God. It’s as if he’s saying, “Come on God, I’m saying more and more outrageous things about You—come on—come and get me!” Bill Maher is blaming God for death because he does not want to accept that he is a sinner in need of salvation. He wants to be his own god—he shakes his fist at the God who created man and also provides the gift of salvation for those who will receive it.

If only he would follow this verse: “That if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved” (Romans 10:9).

I’m reminded that God is a God of grace and mercy:

Knowing this first: that scoffers will come in the last days, walking according to their own lusts, and saying, “Where is the promise of His coming? For since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of creation.” For this they willfully forget: that by the word of God the heavens were of old, and the earth standing out of water and in the water, by which the world that then existed perished, being flooded with water. But the heavens and the earth which are now preserved by the same word, are reserved for fire until the day of judgment and perdition of ungodly men.

But, beloved, do not forget this one thing, that with the Lord one day is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day. The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some count slackness, but is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance. (2 Peter 3:3–9)

Yes, God is longsuffering toward Bill Maher. But it is appointed unto Mr. Maher that he will die—and then God has the last say. One day Bill Maher will give an account to God for all these statements he has made: “But I say to you that for every idle word men may speak, they will give account of it in the day of judgment” (Matthew 12:36).

We need to pray for Bill Maher. In his present spiritual state, he will not only die once but twice: “But the cowardly, unbelieving, abominable, murderers, sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars shall have their part in the lake which burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death” (Revelation 21:8).

This past week a very special friend of ours in Australia, Bethley Bazely, passed away. Bethely leaves a husband (Ralph), children, grandchildren, parents, and other family members—but Bethley loved the Lord. She was a dedicated Christian, and she is now forever with the Lord. Bethley wasn’t well known on television as Bill Maher is—but Bethley this past week entered the presence of the Lord, and I have thought about the following verse: “Finally, there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will give to me on that Day, and not to me only but also to all who have loved His appearing” (2 Timothy 4:8).

Yes, one day, when God determines, Bill Maher will die and enter eternity: “It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God” (Hebrews 10:31).

I truly fear for Bill Maher’s soul.
