Gay Marriage Headed to the Supreme Court

The issue of same-sex marriage is now heading to the United States Supreme Court. As such unions have been increasingly accepted across the nation, it was only a matter of time before the Supreme Court took a case and handed down a decision for the nation.  That day is now expected to come before the justices adjourn in June of this year.

According to the Washington Post, the Supreme Court will be deciding “whether the Constitution requires that same-sex couples be allowed to marry no matter where they live or whether states are free to limit wedlock to its traditional definition as a union only between a man and a woman.” In 2012 only nine states, and the District of Columbia, legally permitted gay marriage. Since then, that number has mushroomed to 36 states as well as DC. Biblical values as the basis for marriage are quickly disappearing across the nation and, depending on what the Supreme Court decides, could be gone completely.

As the justices of the Supreme Court get together to make this important decision, they would do well to remember Christ’s words: "He who is not with Me is against Me” (Matthew 12:30) and “Have you not read that He who made them at the beginning ‘made them male and female,’ and said, ‘For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh’?” (Matthew 19:4-5). Those who do vote to allow for gay marriage across the nation are not in a neutral position. They are standing against Christ and against biblical authority. Instead, they are doing “whatever is right in their own eyes” (Judges 21:25) and are making themselves—not God—the moral authority.

You see, marriage is not a man-made institution that can be arbitrarily redefined based on the whims of our culture. Marriage was created and ordained by God and therefore only God has the right to define marriage. And God has defined marriage as one man for one woman (Genesis 2:22–24). Sadly, the widespread acceptance of gay marriage is a clear sign of a culture that has rejected God’s Word as its foundation and is instead basing its thinking on man’s ideas (Romans 1:18–32).

Now, if the Supreme Court decides to allow for gay marriage nationwide, then why stop there? Why not polygamy next? Or polyamory? Bestiality? Pederasty? Pedophilia? Without a basis in an absolute authority for marriage and sexuality, none of these perversions are wrong! It’s only because of a biblically based ethic that we can say that they are wrong. And they certainly are, because they violate God’s original design as well as His direct commands in Scripture.

The Supreme Court justices need to understand that one day they will stand before the Supreme Court, when the righteous Judge of the universe will have them give account to Him: “They will give an account to Him who is ready to judge the living and the dead” (1 Peter 4:5).

I encourage you all to be in prayer that the US Supreme Court will do the right thing and will uphold biblical marriage. Our culture is rapidly turning away from God and from biblical values and is becoming increasingly secular. We need to be salt and light in a dying world by standing boldly on God’s Word and preaching the life-changing gospel of Jesus Christ. That’s the only way we can see change!

Also, there is great concern that the more gay marriage is accepted, the more we will see a greater intolerance of those who stand for biblical marriage. Biblical Christians will be persecuted in various ways as this intolerance grows. This is where the culture is heading as more secularists who are against God’s Word are able to impose their anti-God religion on society.
