God’s Word Is the Only Consistent Standard for Morality

by Ken Ham

I’m often struck by the saddening inconsistency of many people who start their thinking with man’s opinions rather than God’s Word. You see, when you start with God’s Word you have a firm foundation for your thinking and for morality to anchor to. But when you reject God’s Word, the foundation becomes man’s word and what is right in our own eyes, just like in the days of the judges of the Old Testament (Judges 21:25).

Word of God

Well, in a recent Thanksgiving address US President Barack Obama made this statement in the context of American values: ”all God's children are worthy of our compassion and care.” Now, what Obama is saying is true—equality, compassion, and care for others are all biblical values grounded in the fact that we are made in God’s image (Genesis 1:27). But, sadly, it looks like Obama only recognizes this for some of God’s children, because he doesn’t believe that this is true for the unborn. Instead of deserving compassion and care, Obama believes that they should be legally allowed to be killed in their mother’s wombs. This is very inconsistent of him (and it’s evil). You can’t affirm the value of “all God’s children” on one hand, and then deny the value of those who have yet to be born on the other hand. This is what happens when God’s Word is not your ultimate standard—morality becomes based on man’s ever-changing and hopelessly inconsistent ideas.

Obama also recently spoke out about the horrific Thanksgiving weekend shooting at a Planned Parenthood office in Colorado, rightly deploring the violence of the gunman. Again, Obama is right in deploring the violence of this man and his evil act that took the lives of three people and injured nine others. But in decrying the violence of the gunman and not the violence of the doctors and staff that Planned Parenthood employs, Obama is being inconsistent. He’s saying it’s not okay to violently kill defenseless, peaceable adults—and it certainly is not—but it is okay to consent to and to violently murder a defenseless, peaceable unborn child. Now, as Bible-believing Christians we can say that both are utterly wrong. We certainly don’t agree with Planned Parenthood and what they do, but we are against murder of any kind whether that be babies in the womb or those who have been born and been on earth awhile.

Our hearts go out to those who lost loved ones in this tragic act of violence. Please be in prayer for them and pray for those who inconsistently value some lives and not others. Pray that they will come to know Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior and will have their hearts and minds changed for eternity.

Thanks for stopping by and thanks for praying,
Ken
