Expecting 31 Presents!

We not only have five children (and, of course, that should mean five really great presents for me!) and seventeen grandchildren (shouldn’t that mean I get another 17 great gifts?) but we also have two daughters-in-law and two sons-in-law (that should mean another four presents!). And that’s not all! Because Father’s Day in Australia is in September—and four of our kids were born there, and we registered our American-born daughter as an Australian—I should get five more presents! So, I’m in great expectation to receive 31 presents total for Father’s Day celebrations this year!

After all, I paid in advance for all those presents: costs of food and clothes from when they were born, college costs, handouts when they needed it, costs of weddings, and much more. Oh, and add to that all the babysitting income we should have received. And then there’s the value of all the advice I’ve given them (though I probably will discount that by 60% to match with what they actually accepted!).

Yep, I’m expecting all those expensive presents!

Ok, so our kids will respond, “Whatever Dad.” But the truth is, I hope they won’t get me expensive presents (because they will need more handouts if they do!). At my age, I don’t really need “things”—except maybe for more Advil, pain relief cream, and a pillow from My Pillow that, apparently, is guaranteed to make me sleep peacefully for hours at night.

And the greatest gift a father/grandfather could ever have is to see his children and grandchildren saved for eternity. It’s such a blessing to see the spiritual legacy we passed on to our children, now being passed onto their children. That to me is what makes my heart beat for joy, and when all our children and their families join us for a wonderful meal and time of fun and fellowship—and of course, I expect them to ask me for a lot more advice.

But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have firmly believed, knowing from whom you learned it and how from childhood you have been acquainted with the sacred writings, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus (2 Timothy 3:14–15).

But the steadfast love of the LORD is from everlasting to everlasting on those who fear him, and his righteousness to children’s children, to those who keep his covenant and remember to do his commandments (Psalm 103:17–18).

On this Father’s Day in the USA, I have some special advice for all fathers, all kids, and grandkids: to get infallible advice, go to the Word of God.

All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work (2 Timothy 3:16–17).
