New poll finds that young Americans are leaning left

America is changing. One of the things we’ve warned the church about, is that the next generation are so secularized and evolutionized (including most of the young people from churches), that this will change the face of America. A new poll reported on the New York Times certainly seems to bear this out—and is worth reading through.

The report states:

“Forty-four percent said they believed that same-sex couples should be permitted to get married, compared with 28 percent of the public at large. They are more likely than their elders to support the legalization of possession of small amounts of marijuana. The findings on gay marriage were reminiscent of an exit poll on Election Day 2004: 41 percent of 18-to-29-year-old voters said gay couples should be permitted to legally marry, according to the exit poll … Their views on abortion mirror those of the public at large: 24 percent said it should not be permitted at all, while 38 percent said it should be made available but with greater restrictions. Thirty-seven percent said it should be generally available.”

Rock shock

My armchair theologian friend, Tom Chesko, has written an excellent devotional on the journey of Wesley Powell down the Grand Canyon and the effect of millions-of-years teaching on how he viewed the Bible. I would encourage you to read this devotion. Here is an excerpt:

While the Powell expedition makes for an exciting and fascinating read, what is more important for the discerning Christian is Powell’s journey from a knowledge of Scripture which he acquired in a devout Christian home, to the belief that the biblical record was mythology. His parents entertained hopes that their son, like his namesake, would become a preacher of the gospel. What led John Wesley Powell to abandon his Christian roots, and never return? The answer lies in Powell’s acceptance of the doctrine of uniformitarianism which was first proposed by James Hutton in 1795, and later expounded by Charles Lyell in Principles of Geology, written in 1830.

Airline blues

Well, my wife and I arrived home from Mexico on Wednesday—minus two pieces of luggage (that were delivered the next day). Our trip down was a mess (having to spend a night in Atlanta), and our trip back had baggage problems. I must admit—I get frustrated with commercial airlines. There is no customer service these days—they can cancel flights, throw you off flights, change times, lose your baggage, and do whatever they want—but if passengers needs to make a change (even if minor), they may be treated discourteously and charged a fortune! And if they lose your luggage, after you’ve stood in line for an hour or so, as they only have one or two people working, you get the feeling that they are not particularly inclined to help. And what about all those upgrades for frequent flyers? Well, they seem to say, “Sir, you didn’t pay enough for your ticket in the first place, so you can’t have an upgrade.” And what is the advantage of being a platinum flyer? Well, nothing as far as I’ve experienced—except they seem to try harder to lose your luggage. Well, I’m just sounding off, as travel on airlines is not what it used to be—I think they must believe in evolution, as they treat passengers like animals in a cattle truck!
