Kentucky Church Promoting Evolution

Recently, a number of churches promoted evolution on what has become known as “Evolution Sunday”—a Sunday close to the birthday of Charles Darwin. Sadly, a few hundred churches across the nation participated in promoting Darwin and evolution from their pulpits. One such church was in Kentucky, the same state as our Creation Museum—and within a reasonable driving distance of the Creation Museum. Here is an excerpt from their church bulletin so you can read for yourself what was being told to the congregation:

This year represents the 200th anniversary of the birth of Charles Darwin (February 12, 1809) and the 150th anniversary of the publication of his seminal work On the Origin of Species in 1859. Charles Darwin made significant contributions to modern science. But it is the implications of his theories on religious thought that are of greatest interest to most people.

What better way to explore this issue than through Darwin’s own religious journey? This backdrop provides a rich opportunity to demonstrate that religion and science have much to offer one another and are not adversaries.

While February 13 -15, 2009 has been designated Evolution Weekend, Union Church will offer its program following worship at noon, on Sunday, February 22nd. . . .

We in Kentucky have the mixed opportunity to house the Creation Museum in Covington, which seeks to polarize religion and science. Evolution Weekend is an opportunity for serious discussion and reflection on the relationship between religion and science. One important goal is to elevate the quality of the discussion on this critical topic–to move beyond sound bytes. A second critical goal is to demonstrate that religious people from many faiths and locations understand that evolution is sound science and poses no problems for their faith. . . . If enough interest on the subject, there are many resources available which could serve as a series, including materials about the Creation Museum and maybe even a visit to Covington, depending on how curious we are and whether or not we want to support that institution by our attendance.

You can read the actual bulletin, which the church itself published online, at:

Actually, the Creation Museum is not in Covington—it is in Petersburg (but who’s worried about accuracy?). And the Creation Museum does not polarize religion and science—the Creation Museum scientists (PhD scientists) love science and show clearly that observational science confirms the Bible’s history in Genesis.

Devotion

No substitute for going and preaching

(Mat 10:6–7) But go rather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel. And as ye go, preach, saying, The kingdom of heaven is at hand.

Wrong living can negate our gospel message and right living can support it, but never replace the message the Lord Jesus Christ commands us to go and preach.

Thanks for stopping by and thanks for praying,

Ken
