Be Equipped with Answers to Death and Suffering

by Ken Ham

In our broken, hurting world, one of those most common questions that people have is, “If there is a good God, why is there so much death and suffering in the world?” To answer this question, we have go back to the account of creation in Genesis.

In Genesis 1:31 we read, “Then God saw everything that He had made, and indeed it was very good.” God’s original creation was “very good”—free from any death or suffering. But the first couple, Adam and Eve, chose to rebel against God’s clear command to not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil (Genesis 2:17). The penalty for this sin was clear, “of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die.” Adam and Eve chose to sin and the consequence for their sin was death, that’s why we all die (Romans 5:12).

Paul calls death the “last enemy” in 1 Corinthians 15:26 because death was never originally part of God’s creation. Death is an intruder brought into creation by rebellion and sin. But Jesus Christ, the last Adam, stepped into history, died on the Cross, taking our penalty—death—that we deserve because of our sin upon Himself. Those who have repented and trusted in Christ no longer need to fear death because Christ has been victorious over it (1 Corinthians 15:55–57). And someday, because of the great mercy of God, death and suffering will be permanently done away with (Revelation 21:4).
