Why Are the Ark Encounter and Creation Museum Open Sunday Afternoons?

by Ken Ham

I’m sometimes asked why our two world-class attractions, the Ark Encounter and the Creation Museum, are open on Sundays (with modified hours). Since they are Christian-run attractions that employ Bible-believing Christians, why are we open Sunday afternoons?

Well, the church is the body of Christ worldwide. The Ark Encounter and Creation Museum are part of the church’s work. There are increasing numbers of people these days that won’t go to a local church but will go to attractions like the Ark Encounter, where the Word of God and the gospel are presented clearly. The Ark and the Creation Museum complement what the local church is doing—and support the work of the local church. It’s all part of fulfilling the Great Commission:

Go into all the world and proclaim the gospel to the whole creation. (Mark 16:15, ESV)

Building themed attractions that present the message of God’s Word and the salvation message is a unique and powerful way to reach today’s increasingly secularized culture—and reach those large numbers of young people that have left the church. Some churches, in addition to their normal church programs, use concerts, dramas, banquets (on different days including Sundays), and many other means to reach out to people. There are many ways to influence people with an important message. The Creation Museum and Ark Encounter are the two leading Christian themed attractions designed to not only equip Christians, but attract people from all cultural and religious backgrounds and then boldly present the most vital message of all—the message of salvation in Christ.

Being open Sunday afternoons allows us to reach even more people with the gospel while still allowing our staff to attend church.

Our hours on Sunday begin at 12 p.m. so staff can attend their local churches in the morning (many churches no longer have an evening service). Being open Sunday afternoons allows us to reach even more people with the gospel while still allowing our staff to attend church. It also gives people the opportunity to bring friends and family (particularly those who don’t have opportunity during the week because of work, or those visiting from out of town) to an evangelistic facility to be equipped and/or challenged concerning the truth of God’s Word and the saving gospel. Some local churches already are utilizing this opportunity to bring groups to the Ark as part of their own outreach to the community.

Pray for all those people who visit these God-honoring facilities. And specifically pray for those non-Christians who come to these attractions, that they will not only hear the message of God’s Word and the gospel, but will respond in faith and be saved for eternity.

Thanks for stopping by and thanks for praying,
Ken
