Do Avocados Really “Make Everything Better”?

Many of you likely watched the Super Bowl game this past weekend, and you may have caught the “Avocados From Mexico” ad that played during a break. Now why would I be commenting on an advertisement for avocados? Because it featured Adam and Eve!

What If . . . ?

The description on YouTube for this ad reads:

What if things had gone differently in the Garden of Eden? What if “Avocados From Mexico” had been there just in time to make the whole world better? Can you imagine what modern New York would look like today? So can we. Barely. Welcome to The Big Avocado.

The ad opens with Adam in the paradise of the garden of Eden, enjoying what God has made. But it doesn’t last—suddenly, thunder rumbles and lightning crashes. Adam turns to Eve and asks: what is going on? To which she responds, with a mouthful of fruit, that she might “have taken a small bite!” Suddenly, they realize Adam is naked, and he runs and hides. Then a cheery prairie dog holding an avocado pops up to tell her to try an Avocado from Mexico because “They make everything better!” Eve opens the avocado to show an alternative future, where, instead of eating the forbidden fruit, Eve ate an avocado and now our modern-day New York City is an Edenic perfection of peace, happiness, and love (although, ironically, the ad ends with Eve in this perfect modern world making an off-color sexual joke, showing the producers don’t understand that a perfect world is only possible if there is no sin, like off-color humor!).

You can watch the full ad here (please note there is partial “Adam and Eve”-like nudity throughout the ad).

Yearning for Eden

But it’s an interesting example of how our world often yearns for what we’ve lost.

Now, of course, this ad is just trying to cleverly (though sacrilegiously) promote avocados. But it’s an interesting example of how our world often yearns for what we’ve lost. We know this world, with its brokenness, pain, hatred, disappointment, unfairness, disease, and—ultimately—death, isn’t the way that it should be. And that’s because this world isn’t the world that God made!

The world God made was a perfect world (Genesis 1:31)—and as much as the TV producers tried to imagine such a world, they can’t (none of us can) really imagine what perfect would be like. But we know that perfection didn’t include any death, disease, suffering, pain, harsh toil, thorns and thistles, animals killing each other, or human conflict. Mankind (Adam and Eve) had a perfect relationship with nature, each other, and with God. But sin broke God’s original creation, and now all of creation, including we ourselves, groans (Romans 8:22).

Avocados Won’t Save Us—But Jesus Did!

But the good news is the situation isn’t hopeless! No, avocados won’t save us (only shed blood—a perfect sacrifice—can pay the price for sin, not fruits or vegetables). But Jesus, the God-man, did! He came to earth as the Last Adam to pay, with his death on the cross, the sin debt that the first Adam, and all of us in Adam, owed a holy and righteous God. Now everyone who turns from their sin and puts their faith and trust in Jesus receives forgiveness of their sin and new and everlasting life.

It will be perfectly satisfying as our relationship with God is fully restored and we spend eternity in his presence, worshipping him and enjoying the incredible new creation he has made!

And that everlasting life is the perfection that our hearts yearn for. God will create a new heavens and new earth where there will be no more pain, suffering, crying, or death—no more curse from sin! It will be far more amazing than the “utopia” of The Big Avocado that the “Avocados From Mexico” producers imagined! It will be perfectly satisfying as our relationship with God is fully restored and we spend eternity in his presence, worshipping him and enjoying the incredible new creation he has made! But this is a warning, too!

As Revelation 21:1–8 says,

Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and the sea was no more. And I saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Behold, the dwelling place of God is with man. He will dwell with them, and they will be his people, and God himself will be with them as their God. He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.”

And he who was seated on the throne said, “Behold, I am making all things new.” Also he said, “Write this down, for these words are trustworthy and true.” And he said to me, “It is done! I am the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end. To the thirsty I will give from the spring of the water of life without payment. The one who conquers will have this heritage, and I will be his God and he will be my son. But as for the cowardly, the faithless, the detestable, as for murderers, the sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars, their portion will be in the lake that burns with fire and sulfur, which is the second death.”

Are you among the thirsty who have been given the free gift of the living water of Christ? Or are you one of the cowardly, faithless, detestable, murderers, sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and liars who will suffer the second death? If you haven’t repented of your sin and drunk the living water of Christ, turn to Christ today!

Oh, and we don’t have to wait until we get to heaven to experience joy and peace, even in this broken world! Christ offers it to us now.

I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world. (John 16:33)
