“It Looks Broken to Me!”

If you’ve ever attended or watched one of my presentations, you’ll notice I use numerous illustrations throughout because a picture really is worth a thousand words, as the saying goes. I thought today I’d share four of those images with you, along with the teaching I provide to accompany them.

  • Kid pointing to statue saying 'It looks broken to me'
  • Romans 8:22 and illustration of broken world because of sin
  • Kid pointing to broken world because of sin
  • Perfect World, Intrusion, Restoration

These illustrations remind us that the world we live in is not as God made it. When God originally created everything, it was “very good.” There was no death, disease, or suffering. But because we (in Adam) sinned against our holy God (we committed high treason against God by our outright disobedience), God judged with death and the curse (Genesis 3:14–19; Romans 5:12).

Now it’s a broken world because of sin, permeated with death and suffering.

For those Christians who believe in millions of years, it is only logical that the world as we see it today with all its groaning has gone on like this for millions of years before man. This then puts the blame on God for death, disease, and suffering. But God’s Word blames our sin!

No, one can’t add millions of years into Scripture. To do so is to attack the character of God and undermine the authority of the Word of God.

One can’t add millions of years into Scripture. To do so is to attack the character of God and undermine the authority of the Word of God.

But this groaning world will not continue indefinitely. One day, Jesus will return and make a new heaven and earth where there will be no more death, disease, pain, or suffering. It will be a restoration (Acts 3:20–21). If death, disease, and suffering have been here since God created life, then it makes no sense that there will be a restoration to a new heaven and earth with no death and suffering.

No! There was no death, disease, or suffering before man’s sin. The world is broken because of sin.

Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and the sea was no more. And I saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Behold, the dwelling place of God is with man. He will dwell with them, and they will be his people, and God himself will be with them as their God. He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away. (Revelation 21:1–4)

Thanks for stopping by and thanks for praying,
Ken
